Hi, and welcome to The Harrogate Girl.
My name is Victoria Turner and I’m lucky enough to live in the spa town of Harrogate. Voted the happiest place to live three times in a row it’s been dubbed the jewel of North Yorkshire I am the eldest but my little sister soon followed me into the world 15 months later. I grew up on the south side of Harrogate, in a four bed end terrace, and went to Pannal Primary School followed by Harrogate Grammar. From a young age I used to love going to antique fairs and interior shops with my mum. I remember aged seven deciding I wanted to be an interior designer. I was pretty fixated with the look of my bedroom. I didn’t have posters of pop stars instead I remember saving up to buy my first bed. This wasn’t any bed; it was a bunk bed with a sofa underneath. My first part-time job was at Bettys as a waitress where I honed my people skills, learnt all about being the perfect host and event planning. I was never academic and had to study hard to achieve my grades for university. Deciding what to study I knew I’d struggle with interior design so I decided to study something with a little more versatility. In 2008 I graduated from Leeds Metropolitan in BA (Hons) Events Management. To celebrate I did what every graduating 24 year old does best… I traveled to Australia. For three months my sister and I traveled the East coast, making some fab friends along the way.
Returning from Australia, Britain was hit by the recession and finding a job was going to so much harder. I returned to Bettys & Taylors in my first proper job in HR. A year later my sister and I (aged 25) bought our first house; a two up, two down Victorian terrace just off Skipton Road. I then went on to work in PR and Communications. It’s a very interesting profession to work with as it is constantly changing. Now in my seventh year with Bettys & Taylors I truly feel I was meant to do this. I’ve been fortunate to work on some really interesting and fun projects. I always say if you were to cut me I’d be cake all the way through.
We sold out house in February and with the housing market recovered we made some money on the house, allowing me to purchase my apartment. I cherish my apartment, it is perfectly formed, in the beautiful Cold Bath Road area.
In September of this year I helped to organise our first blogger event; The Bettys Tea Party in London. It was a great success and my first insight into the blogging community. Researching into Yorkshire bloggers I found Harrogate lacked lifestyle and personal blogs The Harrogate Girl was born.
The Harrogate Girl is a a flower press for memories, carefully collected and preserved. Written by me, I’ll be sharing what I love, not what I don’t. I’ll to give you tips on where I think is great right now, on where the newest openings are and offer honest reviews on places I visit. It’s a weird and wonderful mix of my favourite things (gin, interiors and food) and my life in happiest place in the UK. I hope you enjoy the read.
I’d love to hear from you. Please comment on my posts or get in touch.
