No.88 Walmgate at Hotel Indigo is a stone’s throw from York city centre. I love York so I was very excited to make the trip over from Harrogate to find out more. As always, I noticed the interior of the restaurant first – modern with a rustic edge and lovely vibe. The staff were very friendly, including the restaurant manager Jonathan who welcomed us to our table.
Eating at No. 88 Walmgate
The menu at No.88 Walmgate was developed to inspire and delight diners with the flavours of Yorkshire. Dishes include Roasted Beetroot with Swaledale Cheese to West Riding Steak with the option of adding Harrogate Blue Cheese! They also stock a cracking selection of local craft beers and ales to accompany your meal. Speaking to Jonathan we found out No.88 hasn’t been open long, it certainly felt new and also very clean.
To start we shared a olive and hummus dipping platter with olive bread.
The hummus was gorgeous, so smooth and creamy. I also loved the carrots, including a few purple carrots to dip into the hummus. Everything was lovely and fresh including the side salad with a delicious dressing.
For main Niki chose the Yorkshire Wagyu Steak Burger (£14). It was a fantastic burger, really meaty and the chips were big and chunky but still fluffy inside. We did feel the burger was a little on the small side, especially for £14. We also order a stack of Onion Rings (£3) which were the best Onion Rings we’ve ever tasted, crisp and not greasy.
I wanted something not too heavy so chose the Spiced Chicken Escalope (£8). It comes on a flat bread with a lush green side salad, fresh buffalo tomatoes and chili mayonnaise. It’s great value for money and very filling. The Head Chef Craig describes the menu as a selection of his favourite things from Yorkshire, brought together to refresh, sustain and entertain.
After stuffing our faces we decided to take a break before our dessert… The Freak Shake!
We were treated to a show from Head Chef Craig, who built the fabulous Freak Shake right in front of our very eyes!
This mad concoction of local Yorvale ice cream, topped with whipped cream, fresh fruit, nuts, marshmallows, popcorn, donuts and Kit Kats all served in a vintage glass with a long spoon and a straw. This £7 dessert was a hard mission to complete but we managed. I would strongly suggest it is a two person dessert, even blogger The Yorkshire Gentleman struggled to finish his!
No. 88 is open daily from 12 noon until 10 pm. It’s a lovely little walk along Walmgate where’s you’ll find some lovely vintage fashion shops and cute coffee houses.
Go check it out, try a Freak Shake and report back!
P.S. Thank you to No.88 Walmgate for inviting us to a three course lunch. Views are my own.
Great review Victoria! The hummus and olives starter looks delicious, maybe I should of had that instead of the cheese on toast! As for the freak shake, your right its definitely a two person dessert
