Owners, Laurence and Gemma Page-Connolly opened The Champagne Concept 10 months ago with the ambition to import the finest boutique Champagnes. It all started when they took a trip to the Champagne region of France five years ago.
Touring the big Champagne houses their passion for bubbles grew and grew but when they visited the small independents they knew their lives had changed forever. Now the self-proclaimed Champagne fanatics want to share the wonderful world of boutique Champagne with the people of Harrogate.
The world of Champagne is very similar to that of Whiskey, the big houses are masters of blending, they buy their grapes from multiple sources, blend them together and constantly create quality Champagnes, the boutique houses are more like single malts, the variety of flavours are much greater as each Champagne producer has a specific story to tell about their grapes, their land, their style. We think exploring Champagnes from the boutique houses is far more fun!
Harrogate’s Champagne Bar
With its smart blue front, The Champagne Concept stands proud on Oxford Street. It offers a friendly and informal way to learn about Champagne. Laurence told me the best way to learn is to taste it; that I won’t disagree with. So when Laurence invited Matt and I to a sneak peak of their new ‘Champagne Brunch opening, I couldn’t refuse!
They’ve teamed up with their next door neighbour Baltzersen’s to offer a fantastic luxurious brunch.
Their set menu for £20 per person has choice of dishes served with the most delightful freshly squeezed orange juice, endless tea or coffee and of course Champagne! Matt and I decided to go ‘halfies’ (this is when you share your food with your other half) and ordered a famous Baltzersen’s waffle with bananas, fresh cream & yummy Nutella and a smoked bacon, gravlaks (cured salmon) on sourdough toast served with poached duck egg & hollandaise sauce
The food was faultless, just what we needed to kick start our weekend. I’d highly recommend the smoked bacon and eggs on sourdough. To accompany our food we tried both the White and Rosé Roger Manceaux which slipped down very nicely. Did you know that to make Champagne Rosé you add red wine! No I didn’t know that either.
Talking to Laurence you could see his passion and he’s very keen to share his knowledge about the Champagnes they have on offer. It’s also a great place to pick up that last minute thank you bottle or Birthday gift. The price of their Champagne is incredibly reasonable but I feel the breakfast is a little pricey… £40 for two people.
This Champagne Brunch is a fabulous way of treating someone special and they are taking bookings for this weekend right now. What are you waiting for? Reserve your table now by calling 01423 527823.
P.S. Thank you to The Champagne Concept for their invitation to try their new Champagne Brunch Menu.
