Well, Deano is back and on top form. Since selling up the Yorkshire Tapa restaurant in a year or so ago Deano has been freelancing but now he is back in the kitchen after an opportunity arose in the Yorkshire Hotel.
The Yorkshire hotel is set to go under a complete refurbishment but kicked off with a bang and opened it’s new restaurant – Scran. Scran is located on the ground floor where HG1 used to be. A term used for food generally in the North of England, Scran serves sumptuous tapas with a Yorkshire twist. It’s like having the green light to have all your Yorkshire classics in one sitting!
First things first, you must take the Scran Plan, a test to see what suites you best. It’s a great menu perfect for large parties as 14 of the 21 dishes can be made gluten free. The plan told us we are unfussy, eat your heart out, sharer is caring people, so we opted for the Chefs Scran (£22pp). Five plates with bread and dip to start all chosen by the chef himself.
We also ordered an extra Haddock Fondue as we’d heard it was a speciality of Deanos so we just had to try it!
We were served delicious crispy king prawns drizzled with a sweet chilli sauce and sprinkled with salty kale seaweed; a beautiful Cajun spiced sea bass tacos; the sublime smoked haddock fondue; posh pie & peas with black pudding and apple filled pastry; a stunning Balti spiced lamb rump and to finish a ‘weeping tiger’ rare rump steak.
We enjoyed every little morsel. That was until the last dish… our eyes were obviously bigger than our stomachs as we could only manage a mouthful. With our tails between our legs we asked for a doggy bag in the hope Deano wouldn’t be offended. Instead Deano found it very funny and wrote on our doggy bag:
The restaurant has had a makeover but I feel they would benefit from an interior designer to bring the identity of Scran out even further. However, it had a wonderful atmosphere and fantastic service. I can’t tell you how much you should go to Scran – apart from, grab your friends and get some Scran. You won’t regret it!
The hotel chain is owned by HRH Group, who also own the Fat Badger and the White Hart Hotel.
