Can we just take a moment to talk about Wild Plum Café. I knew about this place, but it wasn’t until a month or so ago that I decided to meet a friend there.
Based near the M&S Food Hall, just off Leeds Road is Snooty Frocks, specialising in wedding attire for mother of the bride, bridesmaids and anyone wanting to stand out at a party. Above the house of fashion is the most amazing little café; The Wild Plum. I first visited with What Sophie Sees and her little boy, I met Sophie through Instagram and – after mutual admissions of stalking each other – we decided to meet for a coffee. Having heard their waffles were the bees knees, I went all out and ordered Classic Waffles (£10.00). Sophie ordered Eggs Any Way (£5.50).
The waitress placed down Sophie’s eggs on sourdough and we both oohed and ahhed at the beautiful sight before us, that was until the waitress put my waffles down in front of me… oh my gosh, I think it was the most beautiful breakfast I’ve ever ordered.
The tower of waffles showered in succulent berries, pretty pansies and a dusting of icing sugar. But the dish didn’t stop there, on the side was three cute pots of pure delight; one had a creamy blueberry Hesper Farm Skyr yoghurt; the middle had gooey Nutella chocolate; and the last held good old maple syrup.
The brains behind the masterpieces is the daughter of the owner of Snooty Frocks. Bethany Haresign, prepares and makes everything from fresh and her aim is to ‘wow’ her guests. Bethany has a pretty impressive background including training with Michel Roux at the Waterside Inn in Bray, where she cooked for the Queen!
The café is lovely inside, but I have to warn you it is small – seating just 35 people – so if you plan to head there on a weekend expect to queue! I’d also mention it is up some stairs so if you had a buggy it might be difficult to juggle. It’s probably best to mention the price in here too. Breakfast here isn’t cheap but the presentation, love and effort which goes into making it makes it OK, sort of.
However, we both devoured out breakfasts, and to be honest I could have licked the plate clean. I’ve been back since, for breakfast again with my best friends.
I had the Home Cured Slingsby’s Gin Salmon (£12.50) and one of the two Emma’s has the Classic Pancakes (£10.00), much like the waffles, they were a showstopper! My other friend, also named Emma chose a scone with jam and cream (which I cannot find the price to tell you guys).
Again, all three were so beautifully presented and tasted delicious. It’s certainly made me hanker after trying their lunch menu.
The café is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9:30am until 4:00pm (last orders 3:30pm) and on Sundays from 10:00am until 2:00pm. You can catch the 36 bus, which will take you right outside M&S and is a short 3 to 5 minute walk down Hookstone Chase.
